In this notebook are: 1.) More dream journals for 1991. I typed them and they are included in the DREAMS 1990-1991 folder of my JOURNAL/DIARY FILES. 2.) About 40 pages of my novel An Elegy for September scattered throughout. 3.) Notes for a letter explaining how I want to live my life. 4.) 4 pages of a My Turn column for the Taos News about destruction of the Taos Valley. 5.) Notebook's last page contains words I sang for the 1991 KNME documentary "The Sky's the Limit."

This notebook starts with pages 9-17 of my non-fiction photo/essay Keep it Simple. Who knows what happened to the first 8 pages? There are also 83 pages of a book, "Goodbye, Monique," about my French mother, Monique Robert, who died in 1942. I'm still working on that book (in 2011).

There are few pages in this black Mead Notebook. It has 7 pages for my (never published) novel, Great Feelings of Love. (See MANUSCRIPTS OF GFOL in BOXES 53-55.) Notebook also contains two pages of vocabulary lists.

In this folder are: 1.) 18 scribbled envelope notes. 2.) One page on Chelsey McFarland's animals. 3.) A six-page list of Voice of the Butterfly characters. 4.) And 6 pages of random Butterfly novel notes, mostly about Dennis Clinton (Avery) who eventually disappeared from the book. (Aforementioned pages are hand-written.) 5.) 3 mostly typewritten pages describing the Voice of the Butterfly's old harridan, Lydia Arlington Babcock.

This is a random batch of newspaper clippings of stories I thought I could use for the Democracy/Butterfly novel. Stories about a rare butterfly halting a development; embezzling; CPA swindles; drought; check kiting; mercury in trout; investment scams; satanism; ban on female priests; S&L crisis; impoverished workers. All grist for my novelist's mill.

47 handwritten notebook lined pages. I worked for years on a sequal to the 1978 film Midnight Express. Billy Hayes was the subject of that film, and from 1994-2001 he and I collaborated on the sequal screenplay (Midnight Return). So far (2011) the sequal has not been made. I scribbled the 47 handwritten notes in this folder during talks with Billy in Los Angeles on May 2, 1995. There's none of my writing here. Folder contains a pamphlet of Taos County Events for 1996; a Taos Restaurant Guide for 1996; and a Taos 1996-1997 Visitor Guide. I've kept many files like this as background info for my books. This is a small sample.

There's almost nothing here except: 1.) A few phone messages. 2.) 3 pages on repairs that should be made to a friend's house in Saguache, Colorado. 3.) A 4-page commentary on social activism for my Milkweed Editions essay, "An American Child Supreme," published in 2001.

This folder, covering 1988-1999, holds 15 scribbled envelopes (numbered) and 22 pages of mostly handwritten ideas for novels or articles (numbered). Includes a 2-page list of slang terms given me by my son Luke around 1989. Also in this folder is a green napkin with scribbles on it, an article about mock funerals for prairie dogs, and a TBR review of teenagers in America.

This folder contains Xeroxes of 3 sex passages from Erica Jong's novel, Parachutes and Kisses, and 1 excerpt from John Updike's novel, A Month of Sundays. I was trying to learn from them. There's also a few of my own attempts to describe bawdy sex on 4 envelopes. All my life I've wanted to write sexy erotic passages, and pretty much failed completely. Most of the time it just turns into cheap porn.

This slim folder has: 1.) A 2-page handwritten section of On Top of Spoon Mountain attached to a 4-page typed version of the section. 2.) A short 2-page list of characters in Spoon Mountain. 3.) 4 pages of notes on something I called "Alpine Maven," basically the same story as Spoon Mountain.
