NOTES FOR TOBY'S ALEPH, 2000-2001

 File — Box: 132

Scope and Contents

This folder contains 115 mostly handwritten pages (interspersed with a few envelopes and news articles) serving as outline for the large novel I wanted to write. It began as Toby's Aleph, segued into Goodbye, Monique, and became On Top of Spoon Mountain. It has been one of my (so far-2011) great writing failures. The initial draft, begun in 2000, was almost 1300 pages. I kept whittling it down until it became a 24-page short story published in Orion Magazine in July/August 2007. I could not get out of my own life long enough to write a decent piece of fiction. These pages have a loose chronology of actions and several long lists of characters and events. So far (February 2011) the book, On Top of Spoon Mountain, has been a bust. (See ARCHIVAL BOXES 78-85 as a monument to this frustration!)
