PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS IN TAOS, 1982-1998
Series
Scope and Contents
A friend of mine, Ray McSavaney, is a wonderful photographer. Ray, and two other exceptional photographers, Bruce Barnbaum and John Sexton, sponsored the Owens Valley Photography Workshops (begun in 1975) for many years. They may still be going on. The workshops catered to serious, and usually large-format, photographers in the mold of Ansel Adams and others of his ilk. The workshops featured guest instructors, and, in 1988, when Ray decided to do a workshop in Northern New Mexico he invited me to be a guest instructor. I know nothing about large format photography or darkroom techniques, but I could take a 35 millimeter transparency and I knew a lot about Northern New Mexico which could help orient visiting photographers to the area. So I joined Ray and his photographer friends Jack Waltman (and his wife Bev) and Bob Leary and had a fun time participating in the workshops every summer for 10 years. I met many interesting people. Some photographs from these workshop can be found in my PHOTOGRAPHY FILES.
