 File — Box: 131, Folder: 26

I typed these almost illegible cards out in 14 clean pages also included in this folder. (More material related to CHILD OF A STAR can be found in BOX 1, FOLDER 9, and in BOX 2, FOLDER 1, and also in BOX 2, FOLDERS 10-13.)

 File — Box: 131, Folder: 31
Scope and Contents This folder includes 6 prefatory pages (A-F), and 79 typed pages with handwritten corrections related to versions of my New York novel, An American Child Supreme (never published), that I worked on from around 1965 to 1971. (MANY DRAFTS OF THIS NOVEL ARE IN BOXES 9-14 OF THESE ARCHIVES.) Notes in this folder are so extensive they are almost a novel. It's a version of the book where Sammy Hauck is a Native American baseball pitcher, wounded in Vietnam, who tries to make a comeback in Florida...

 File — Box: 131, Folder: 33
Scope and Contents In this notebook, in order, are: 1.) 12 pages of notes on the June 25, 1971 Taos Rodeo. 2.) 3 pages of notes on heated Tres Rios Association meeting, August 21, 1972. (People were pissed that their hands would be tied by legalities in upcoming public hearing over Indian Camp Dam and the conservancy district.) 3.) 4 pages of "The Milagro Beanfield War" where police agent Kyril Montana digs up background info on lawyer Charley Bloom and on a writer, somebody Burgess (whom I later dropped from the...

NOVEL NOTES, 1970s - PART ONE, 1970s

 File — Box: 131, Folder: 34
Scope and Contents This folder and the next four folders derive from thousands of notes scribbled on envelopes then typed up clean. Mostly undated, and not in chronological order. The first 27 pages in this folder are numbered at bottom of the page. Afterwards (and throughout the next 4 folders) pages are numbered on the top right side of page. (In this folder it's pages 1-40.) These typed notes are about 1970s Taos events and personalities. Material in this folder appears written between 1977-1980 and is mostly...

NOVEL NOTES, 1970s - PART TWO, 1970s

 File — Box: 131, Folder: 35
Scope and Contents These pages (numbered 41-85) continue my typed envelope notes begun in the folder above. Mostly still intended as background for The Nirvana Blues. Probably written between 1976-1980.
Dates: 1970s

NOVEL NOTES, 1970s - PART THREE, 1970s

 File — Box: 131, Folder: 36
Scope and Contents These typed notes (pages 86-149), continued from the notes above, are more difficult to pinpoint chronologically than the notes above but they are a continuation of them. They jump around. When they talk about Harry and Lorraine they're referring to a novel I worked on (and never published) between 1974-1976 called Down in Guatemala. Other notes seem related to The Magic Journey (published in 1978). Some material is related to A Ghost in the Music (published in 1979). So apparently a portion of...

Dates: 1970s

NOVEL NOTES, 1970s - PART FIVE, 1970s

 File — Box: 131, Folder: 38
Scope and Contents I'm guessing many of these typed notes (pages 204-273) were written between 1972 and 1973. In places I mention a few more dates. Notes appear geared toward Milagro and Magic Journey. Folder includes pages 204-273.

THREE-RING NOVEL NOTES, 1974

 File — Box: 131, Folder: 39
Scope and Contents These hand-written notes (pages 1-50) are from a 9 x 6 Three-Ring notebook I kept in 1974. The first 29 pages are historical doings from 1935, 1945, and 1953 (execution of the Rosenbergs) intended as background to the life of Morrie Gluckman, my chief protagonist in the never-published novel, Number 25 (See BOXES 18 AND 19 IN MANUSCRIPT FILES). Pages 30-37 include gangster and Yiddish slang words for Number 25. Pages 38-45 could be notes for The Nirvana Blues. Pages 46-49 are from a Tres Rios...

HOW TO BUY A RENTAL PROPERTY IN TAOS, 1982

 File — Box: 131, Folder: 44
Scope and Contents 45 handwritten pages. In 1981, suddenly flush from screenwriting, I decided to buy a Taos "rental" house as a tax shelter. Idiot. I bought a lemon, the plumbing stunk, the roof leaked, the well dried up. Had to drill a new well. The driller hit artesian water he couldn't staunch, almost dropping the house into a sink hole. Halliburton came from Farmington to seal it (for a fortune!) with pressurized concrete. I bailed 6 months later, selling the house, totally broke. And never tried a tax...

AMERICAN BLOOD, LONG VERSION, 1980s

 File — Box: 131, Folder: 45
Scope and Contents 25 typed pages (and 1 handwritten page of "Books to read for capitalism novel"). For years I planned to write a large novel about the rise of industrial capitalism in the U. S. from around 1870 to 1970. It would highlight the violence underlying our culture. Beginning with a Native American massacre and the killing of the buffalo, and ending with My Lai and Vietnam. I never wrote the book, too daunting. This folder contains 25 typed pages of notes about the history I wished to cover, and ideas...

RED ALADDIN NOTE BOOK, CABO RIO NOTES, 1983

 File — Box: 131, Folder: 46

In Miami we spoke to Haitian boat people, Haitian refugees in Krome concentration camp, and Coast Guardsmen who drove us in boats around Miami and Key Biscayne. In Key West we helicoptered out to...
