HOW TO BUY A RENTAL PROPERTY IN TAOS, 1982

 File — Box: 131, Folder: 44

Scope and Contents

45 handwritten pages. In 1981, suddenly flush from screenwriting, I decided to buy a Taos "rental" house as a tax shelter. Idiot. I bought a lemon, the plumbing stunk, the roof leaked, the well dried up. Had to drill a new well. The driller hit artesian water he couldn't staunch, almost dropping the house into a sink hole. Halliburton came from Farmington to seal it (for a fortune!) with pressurized concrete. I bailed 6 months later, selling the house, totally broke. And never tried a tax shelter again. But I thought the lunatic story would make a funny novella. This folder has 45 hand-scribbled (impossible to read) pages about the doomed house that I wrote in a manic fit on January 21, 1982. But I never continued further.
