NOVEL NOTES, 1968 PART I, 1968

 File — Box: 131, Folder: 31

Scope and Contents

This folder includes 6 prefatory pages (A-F), and 79 typed pages with handwritten corrections related to versions of my New York novel, An American Child Supreme (never published), that I worked on from around 1965 to 1971. (MANY DRAFTS OF THIS NOVEL ARE IN BOXES 9-14 OF THESE ARCHIVES.) Notes in this folder are so extensive they are almost a novel. It's a version of the book where Sammy Hauck is a Native American baseball pitcher, wounded in Vietnam, who tries to make a comeback in Florida spring training, fails, then travels out west with the narrator to his home reservation where his tribe's sheep have been decimated by nerve gas testing. 1968 is the year MLK and Bobby Kennedy were assassinated, the Tet Offensive occurred in Vietnam, there was violence at Chicago's Democratic convention. In April, 1968, I took a bus from New York to Colorado Springs and rented a car, intending to travel the SW gathering facts for my novel. But my trip coincided with the King assassination, and I just drove around furiously, unable to calm down or concentrate. I never had a completed draft of this version of the novel. This folder includes: 1.) Prelude pages A-F. 2.) Pages 1-79 of notes and passages for the book.
