GREEN SPIRAL NOTEBOOK, 1971-1972

 File — Box: 131, Folder: 33

Scope and Contents

In this notebook, in order, are: 1.) 12 pages of notes on the June 25, 1971 Taos Rodeo. 2.) 3 pages of notes on heated Tres Rios Association meeting, August 21, 1972. (People were pissed that their hands would be tied by legalities in upcoming public hearing over Indian Camp Dam and the conservancy district.) 3.) 4 pages of "The Milagro Beanfield War" where police agent Kyril Montana digs up background info on lawyer Charley Bloom and on a writer, somebody Burgess (whom I later dropped from the novel). 4.) 42 pages of notes for a public hearing on the Indian Camp Dam held August 24-25, 1972. Very important. Includes testimony of Roland Fife for the Bureau of Reclamation, grilled by Tres Rios Association lawyer, Gene Weisfeld (G. in my notes); 18 pages of Gene's cross examination of Fife; testimony of Fred Allen for State Engineer; Gene's cross examination; Willis Dees, Tres Rios attorney, cross exam; Gene Weisfeld's cross of hydrologist, Zane Spiegel, for Tres Rios Association--6 pages; testimony of Rudy Pacheco and Alfonso Vigil for dam proponents; Willis Dees opening statement on Day 2 of the hearing; testimony for Tres Rios of protestors Paul Valerio, Amadeo Valerio, Andrés Martínez. (See DESCRIPTION OF THIS HEARING IN MY NM REVIEW ARTICLE, "THE HUNTING OF THE SNARK," OCTOBER 1972.)(FOR MY OTHER NM REVIEW ARTICLES ON INDIAN CAMP DAM, SEE NMR ISSUES FROM: OCT. 1971; DEC. 1971; FEB. 1972; APRIL-MAY 1972; JULY 1972; AND NOV. 1972.) 5.) A 5-page article, "Trout Times Infinity," that I published in Southwest Magazine, Nov. 1972. 6.) A nonsense riff about "Roldán." 7.) One-page riff on Greenwich Village, NY. (NOTE: THIS IS AN IMPORTANT NOTEBOOK. THE INDIAN CAMP DAM/CONSERVANCY FIGHT WAS HUGE IN MY NEW MEXICO LIFE AND IN THE WRITING OF MILAGRO, MAGIC JOURNEY, NIRVANA BLUES AND MANY OTHER BOOKS.)
