Scope and Contents I attended the Loomis School in Windsor, Connecticut, (near Hartford) between 1954-1958. This September 25, 1955 Hartford Courant covers a major flood that inundated Hartford (and Loomis also) the fall of my sophomore year.

LOOMIS HOCKEY, 1957

Scope and Contents I played hockey at Loomis. Captain my senior year. This folder contains two articles (one written by me) of games we played. (Many hockey, football, track photos and articles from Loomis were lost in the stolen suitcase mentioned above.) Folder also has a Fall 2001 Loomis Alumni Magazine with old photographs of Loomis including of our (then) new (horrible) hockey rink in 1956. It couldn't hold ice. Finally, our team, on hands and knees, had to chip off all the macadam and start over!

Scope and Contents The summer of 1957 I came out west, first to Taos, then to Portal, Arizona, where I worked at the American Museum of Natural History's Southwest Research Station. (See my LITTLE RED DIARY 1957 in my JOURNAL/DIARY archives.) That summer was seminal to my life. In this folder are 1970 and 1971 newsletters from the SW Research Station explaining activities there. A good overall view. 4 pages.

LOOMIS EPHEMERA, 1956-1958

Scope and Contents 1.) 3 items in this folder are charges to me by the Loomis Business Manager for damage to my room, mostly from throwing a switchblade knife. (One billing has my outraged remarks scrawled on it.) 2.) There's also a funny letter from the Chaffee School (Loomis's sister school) entertainment committee confirming that my Loomis doo-wop singing group, The Ourangutangs, would sing at the Chaffee Junior Prom. 3.) And there's a page of stupid repartee between me and my pal, Skip Sykes. 5 pages.

Scope and Contents These books with freshmen photos were mainly used for fraternity rushing. Hamilton was dependent on fraternities for food, shelter, entertainment. Scope and Contents The summer of 1959 I was a lifeguard at the Avon (CT) Country Club and lived with my Hamilton College buddy Bill Willis's family in West Hartford, CT. Scope and Contents I skiied Vermont with Bill Willis and his family, or with friends, from 1959-1962. Sometimes stayed with Grandma (my stepgrandma) Gleason at her house in Montpelier, Vermont. Great times at Bromley, Sugarbush, Mad River Glen, Stowe, Smuggler's Notch. This folder has pamphlets for these ski areas from that time. And also a highway map of Vermont; a Ski Vermont pamphlet listing all ski areas; and an Eastern Ski Map.

Scope and Contents I spent the summer of 1961 in New York at 4 Sutton Square in the penthouse of Ward and Froggy Cheney's house. I wrote a novel and took guitar lessons from the Reverend Gary Davis up in the Bronx. Ward and Froggy gave me $50 to attend Broadway Plays. This folder has a playbill for "Mary, Mary," starring Barbara Bel Geddes, and for "Dylan," starring Alec Guinness. "Dylan," about Dylan Thomas, had a huge effect on me. Scope and Contents One night in summer of 1961 I met some crazies in Malachy's Bar who introduced me to blues singer Fred Neil who sent me to the Bronx for guitar lessons from the Reverend Gary Davis, a blind street-preacher and musician. Davis became famous, but wasn't in 1961. From him I learned "You Got to Move," "12 Gates to the City," "Banks of the River," and a peppy rag, or was it called a "wing dance?" I was 21. Scope and Contents This tournament featured Hamilton, Cornell, Bowdoin, Williams, Colgate, and Norwich. We lost to Williams and Bowdoin, and beat Colgate. I scored against Williams and Bowdoin, and got 3 goals and 2 assists against Colgate. We really stunk. This folder contains 7 newspaper articles, a program for the Holiday Invitation Hockey Tournament December 19-20-21, 1960, and 2 pamphlet guides to Cornell.

HAMILTON HOCKEY, 1961-1962

Scope and Contents Another horrible year for our team. I was co-captain with Pat McDonnell, but slowed by torn meniscus and sheared ACLs. We only won 2 games, against Amherst and Penn. I scored hat tricks in both those games, my only glory. This folder has 7 newspaper articles and two programs, one vs. Colby, one vs. Cornell. Also a photo and squib about the great Phil Latreille (cf above), formerly of Middlebury, during his tryout with NY Rangers that year. I had played in 6 games where Latreille clobbered us.

LOOMIS ALUMNI HOCKEY, MARCH/APRIL 1969

Scope and Contents (This is chronologically out of order but I placed it here with other hockey riffs.) In 1969 I returned to Loomis for the alumni hockey game. We beat the varsity, 9-8. I scored 5 goals. This article in the Loomis Alumni Magazine only credited me with 4 goals. Of course, I corrected the article!
