REVEREND GARY DAVIS, SUMMER OF 1961

 File — Box: 135, Folder: 17

Scope and Contents

One night in summer of 1961 I met some crazies in Malachy's Bar who introduced me to blues singer Fred Neil who sent me to the Bronx for guitar lessons from the Reverend Gary Davis, a blind street-preacher and musician. Davis became famous, but wasn't in 1961. From him I learned "You Got to Move," "12 Gates to the City," "Banks of the River," and a peppy rag, or was it called a "wing dance?" I was 21. Today, at 70, I still play those songs. This folder contains 5 flyers for a Bronx envangelical gospel service featuring Rev. Gary and his wife on September 24, 1961. (See related material in BOX 1, FOLDER 9.)
