 File — Box: 195, Folder: 13

Scope and Contents

My chapter on "What is a Naturalist, Anyway?" (Concerning my speech about Grandpa at AMNH in New York on June 15, 1991. In the speech I said Pop and Grandpa had told me in the 1940s or 50s that a hermit thrush was called, in Latin, "Catharus guttatus." Big mistake! Pop wrote letters to the museum, to Copeia Magazine's reprint of my talk, and to Natural History Magazine, saying that Catharus was not added to the hermit thrush until 1983, some 30 years after I indicated that Pop and Grandpa had told me that latin name. Which, in the 40s and 50s was Hylocichla guttatus. His letters making a stink about that are funny. No other scientist, either at my speech, or editing Copeia or Natural History Magazine caught my "horrific" mistake. Pop mentioned this mistake of mine in letters to friends for years afterwards!) An interesting chapter. 29 pages.
