GOODBYE, MONIQUE (95), November 30, 2017
File — Box: 195, Folder: 1
Scope and Contents
Childhoods, BOOK ONE, Aftermath, and epilogue, same as #94 just above and also labelled Jmonique.20d. I sent this draft on January 11, 2018, to my friend Bill Rusin in New York (Head of Sales at W.W.Norton publishing company), because he asked me to. This folder includes Xeroxes of photos of Pop and Monique and other family that I always included when I asked friends to read the book. Rusin read 88 pages and told me on the phone "it reads like the phone book." His reply letter is included here,...

GOODBYE, MONIQUE (96), June 25, 2018
File — Box: 195, Folder: 2
Scope and Contents
BOOK ONE, labelled as Jmonique.20e. Beginning pages are focused on Pop and Monique at Peacock Point, and out at the Floyd estate. No mention of Monique as teenager at Peacock Point, or meeting Oqwa Pi in 1933, or going out west to Santa Fe and Soda Springs ranch. Toward end there's no mention of Dad's battle with Mamita for custody of me. And no mention of Monique "whitewash" from my life in the Epilogue. Otherwise, this is a clean draft that's close to the *final BOOK ONE draft I decided on...

BOOK ONE, which is same as #91 directly above, except for some hand-written corrections in July, a few edits, and Post-Its indicating division into 50 chapters. 199 pages (minus corrections and edits).

GOODBYE, MONIQUE (98), August 15, 2018/September 2018
File — Box: 195, Folder: 4
Scope and Contents
BOOK ONE, rewritten slightly on September 5, 2018, and labelled Jmonique.20g. There's a few edits and corrections, but otherwise this is *very close to FINAL DRAFT. No mention of Monique and Oqwa Pi, or her trip out west, her work at Santa Fe anthropology lab. A few edits and corrections up front. No mention of stepmother Brownie in the epilogue. 178 pages.

GOODBYE, MONIQUE (99), August 20, 2018
File — Box: 195, Folder: 5
Scope and Contents
This is the shortest BOOK TWO on record. Labelled Jmonique.20h. An amazing reduction in words, focused mostly on Dad and Mamita after Monique's death. And much of it is my visits to Dad in Smithville while he's dying. I listen to Dad's recording of Monique's voice in 1993; get Danny Davison's VHS tape of Monique in 2000; and Danny's letter about Monique at Peacock Point in 1933. Also tales of Monique that Pop told me on the phone before he died. Obviously, an insane and desperate attempt to...

GOODBYE, MONIQUE (100), August 27, 2018
File — Box: 195, Folder: 6
Scope and Contents
Here is BOOK ONE & BOOK TWO as a single manuscript labelled Jmonique.20j. It's clean, and a *really good draft of the two books together. I felt it was very close to a FINAL DRAFT. BOOK ONE is 166 pages long. BOOK TWO goes from page 167 to 250. 57,644 words. 250 pages long.

GOODBYE, MONIQUE (101), September 1, 2018
File — Box: 195, Folder: 7
Scope and Contents
BOOK ONE and very short BOOK TWO ("Aftermath") labelled Jmonique.20k. A clean copy. Like draft 100 just above, it's a *good copy of the book, perhaps a FINAL DRAFT. The start of the book is edited a bit compared to BOOK ONE just above, and there's a little less material in BOOK TWO. 226 PAGES.

GOODBYE, MONIQUE (102), September 1 (plus), 2018
File — Box: 195, Folder: 8
Scope and Contents
I couldn't resist expanding #101 just above. So, here it is. 63,119 words this time around in a draft labelled Jmonique.20m and obviously corrected in early September. Dad and Monique's childhoods cover the first 40 pages. BOOK ONE starts on page 41, on page 77 they get married. Monique dies and is buried by page 215, and then the AFTERMATH begins. Clean draft. 277 pages.

GOODBYE, MONIQUE (103), August 15-September 5, 2018
File — Box: 195, Folder: 9
Scope and Contents
BOOK ONE, this time around, seriously edited, only 41,800 words. Labelled Jmonique.20g again. I cut out their childhoods, started the story when they meet, court, and get married. And ended it when Monique died in August 1942 on page 168. The aftermath is very short and sweet, same with the Epilogue. I had an epiphany, and just wanted the book to be about the 5 years Dad and Monique were together. Pretty close to #98 above. 183 pages.

My chapter on "What is a Naturalist, Anyway?" (Concerning my speech about Grandpa at AMNH in New York on June 15, 1991. In the speech I said Pop and Grandpa had told me in the 1940s or 50s that a hermit thrush was called, in Latin, "Catharus guttatus." Big mistake! Pop wrote letters to the museum, to Copeia Magazine's reprint of my talk, and to Natural History Magazine, saying that Catharus was not added to the hermit thrush until 1983, some 30 years after I indicated that Pop and Grandpa had...

Chapter One corrections. (This Chapter One was all over the map, summing up everybody in the family--both sides of the ocean--Monique's life and death, Mamita, his marriage to--and my childhood with--abusive Brownie . . . and so forth. I was struggling, haplessly, with a way to begin my story.) About 30 pages.

Chapter One corrections, with a million hand-written scribbles, a major rewrite and very interesting. It really shows "the writer at work!" 29 pages. I seriously ripped those pages a new asshole. Rewritten and corrected May 17-21, 2012, and then retyped clean on May 21, 2012.

Corrections, Excerpts, Deleted Materials #7, May-July 2012
File — Box: 195, Folder: 16
Scope and Contents
Massive hand corrections. 49 pages. I tried to pour in the entire kitchen sink, a kind of roundup of Dad and Monique's lives, her adventures, his adventures after her death, the Long Island and European families, and so forth. Sort of a collage introducing what was about to follow. I really scribbled the bejesus out of it in the rewrite, then apparently typed it up clean in July 2012.
