Scope and Contents Gross, Kelly &Co. purchased wool from New Mexico sheep herders and ranchers for sale to buyers in the East. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the wool was often cleaned and scoured in Las Vegas before shipment; later, it was usually shipped uncleaned or "in the grease." Judging from company records, almost all the wool went to Boston on consignment, where it was sold, mostly to New England textile mills, by wool commission houses which took a percentage of the sale price.

Taylor Winter Quadrathlon. Of particular interest are the early images documenting the village of San Mateo, New Mexico, including village life and sheep ranching activities. A large portion of the photographs pertain to Peña’s years in the foreign service in Costa Rica, Paraguay and Bolivia.
