New Mexico Wool Growers Association Records

 Collection
Identifier: Ms-0178

Scope and Content

The records of the New Mexico Wool Growers (NMWGA) cover the years 1906-1971, with the exception of 1913. The documents are sparse from 1930-1950 and most of them date from 1960. The by-laws of the Stock Growers' Association of New Mexico (1884) are included, as are the original 1906 constitution and by-laws of the NMWGA.

The majority of the collection is comprised of correspondence with NMWGA members; members and representatives of other livestock organizations; governmental bodies, such as the U. S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management; and legislators who could lobby for the Association. Most of the correspondence deals with the issues of the sheep industry: predatory animals, grazing privileges, animal diseases, and lamb and wool marketing and promotion. Other materials include legal and financial records, organizational records (minutes, committees, membership, dues), convention programs and proceedings, resolutions, records of sales and contests, sheep census records and brand books.

These records are arranged chronologically by years or groups of years in much the same order they originally were filed, and by types of material within each group. There are nine series, the last of which (1960-1971) is by far the largest.

Significant correspondents include (in addition to the presidents of the organization): Clinton P. Anderson, H. C. Abbott, A. D. Brownfield, Albert B. Fall, Benigno Hernadez, A. A. Jones, and Ivan Watson.

Historical Sketch

The New Mexico Wool Growers Association (NMWGA) began as the Stock Growers' Association of New Mexico, an organization formed in 1884 and described in the 1968 NMWGA convention program as "a loosely organized group of local livestock protective associations determined to maintain a Territory-wide organization." This was too general to meet the needs of those in the business of sheep raising and wool producing, so the New Mexico Wool Growers Association was organized in 1906. The first officers of the new organization were Solomon Luna, President; A. D. Garrett; and Harry F. Lee. The following individuals served as president of the organization:
  1. Solomon Luna, Los Lunas, 1906-1912
  2. H.C. Abbott, Springer,1912-1916
  3. Eduardo M. Otero, Los Lunas, 1916-1920
  4. Prager Miller, Roswell, 1920-1925
  5. David Farr, Magdalena, 1926-1927*
  6. Floyd W. Lee, San Mateo, 1927-1959
  7. W. E. Overton, Yeso, 1960-1961
  8. Charles D. Fuller, Roswell, 1962-1963
  9. Robert F. Corn, Roswell, 1964-1965
  10. Abe M. Peña, Grants, 1966-1967
  11. Phelps White, Roswell, 1968-1969
  12. W. A. Snipes, Roswell, 1970-(1971)
* "Mr. Farr died June 12, 1927, while serving his second term. Floyd W. Lee, then a vice-president, was named acting president to complete the term, was elected president in 1928 and continued to serve by unanimous annual re-election until the convention of 1960." -66th Annual Convention Program, December 8-10, 1968
