Wool business

 Sub-Series

Scope and Contents

Gross, Kelly &Co. purchased wool from New Mexico sheep herders and ranchers for sale to buyers in the East. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the wool was often cleaned and scoured in Las Vegas before shipment; later, it was usually shipped uncleaned or "in the grease." Judging from company records, almost all the wool went to Boston on consignment, where it was sold, mostly to New England textile mills, by wool commission houses which took a percentage of the sale price.
