Biographical Information
Milhelm and Ali Hindi were from a trading family in Zahlé, Beqaa Valley, Lebanon. In the early 1900s Milhelm emigrated to the United States, came first to Las Vegas New Mexico, and then settled in the small community of Duran, where the Lebanese Coury family was also established in local business. In 1908 he opened a general merchandise store.
William's brother Ali joined him a few years later. Milhelm and Ali changed their names to William and Alex. They established their business as “Wm. Hindi and Bro.” They bought large ranches and expanded into sheep and cattle ranching.
In 1916 Alex married Clarita Duran, daughter of one of the town founders. William married his Lebanese cousin Razmieh. While blending well into their rural New Mexico community, the brothers maintained some Lebanese cultural roots, giving their children Lebanese names.
