GOODBYE, MONIQUE (86), July 31, 2017

 File — Box: 194, Folder: 2
Scope and Contents Corrected in August. BOOK ONE, same as draft 85 just above, except with many Post-It suggestions, a few new inserts, some edits and hand corrections. It's labelled Jmonique.19f-b. It had 203 pages, same as draft 85, but this rewrite adds more pages, randomly paginated or not. It makes a bunch of changes to the draft just above. About 230 pages?

GOODBYE, MONIQUE (87), August 10, 2017

 File — Box: 194, Folder: 3
Scope and Contents BOOK TWO, a clean, original draft labelled Jmonique.18w, that I called *"the best short version." I may have been right. It begins with Pop suing Brownie for divorce in 1956, and then his and my lives that followed until his death in 1998. Monique is revealed, bit by bit, as I sought to learn about her throughout my life. It's a moving portrait of my dad, and of my search for Monique, and of his death, but it's not a portrait of Monique like that of her in the many BOOK ONEs I've written. I...

GOODBYE, MONIQUE (88), September 13, 2017

 File — Box: 194, Folder: 4
Scope and Contents BOOK TWO, a clean, original draft labelled Jmonique.18x. Also a *"good short version." Maybe better than just above. Dad and Johnny's lives from 1942 until Dad's death in 1998. Includes my visits with Mamita, flashback inserts from Dad and Monique's marriage and of her dying in Miami Beach. More in-depth about stepmother Brownie's temper and abuse. Very moving about my search for Monique, and about Pop's death. A little sketchy winding things up in the Epilogue. 158 pages. NOTE: I JUST READ...

 File — Box: 194, Folder: 5-6
Scope and Contents BOOK ONE and BOOK TWO, transcoded by Electric Sheep and printed by Copy Queen and labelled Jmonique.19k. Clean draft. *A good draft. Begins with Dad and Monique's childhood backgrounds, their teenage years, includes Monique's life at Peacock Point, meeting Oqwa Pi, going out west to Santa Fe, then Soda Springs Ranch, then their courtship, and marriage, etc. until Monique dies. Then Dad's fight for custody of me with Mamita. His trip to French Guina after Monique's death. BOOK TWO begins on page...

GOODBYE, MONIQUE (90), October 5, 2017

 File — Box: 194, Folder: 7-8
Scope and Contents BOOK ONE and BOOK TWO, long version, labelled Jmonique.19r. Transcoded badly by Electric Sheep, so the type is very light, and manuscript is full of Post-It suggestions, mostly about Part headings, Chapters, and other mundane stupid stuff. Nobody should waste time reading this version (which pretty much repeats the draft 89 just above), because you won't learn anything new. Just another study in my nitpicking dysfunction. 480 pages.

GOODBYE, MONIQUE (91), October 15, 2017

 File — Box: 194, Folder: 9-10
Scope and Contents BOOK ONE & BOOK TWO, including Monique's childhood of 45 pages and Dad's childhood of 16 pages, labelled Jmonique.20a. Includes my 4-page handwritten list of titles for each short chapter. Includes all of BOOK ONE, when Pop and Monique meet, court, get married, and she dies, and most of BOOK TWO, that includes marriage to Brownie, her abuse, whitewash of Monique, their divorce, Pop marriages to Kathy and Jackie, my visits to Mamita in Barcelona, deaths of Mamita and Grammie, Pop's...

GOODBYE, MONIQUE (93), November 2, 2017

 File — Box: 194, Folder: 13-14
Scope and Contents I've expanded some from draft 92 just above. This one is labelled Jmonique.20c. Same Pop and Monique childhoods. Then a lengthy BOOK ONE. Shorter AFTERMATH. Epilogue and Acknowledgements. 111 titled short chapters. 71,788 words. 302 pages.

GOODBYE, MONIQUE (94), November 30, 2017

 File — Box: 194, Folder: 15-16
Scope and Contents I expanded the damn book again, labelled Jmonique.20d. Same childhood riffs, then a BOOK ONE of 190 pages. Then extended AFTERMATH of 90 pages. 129 titled short shapters. It's all the same story, adding more, or subtracting more. Again, it makes me feel crazy. This draft has 81, 338 words. And, for whatever reason, I felt that this was IT. I should've had my head examined. 342 pages.

GOODBYE, MONIQUE (95), November 30, 2017

 File — Box: 194, Folder: 17
Scope and Contents Childhoods, BOOK ONE, Aftermath, and epilogue, same as #94 just above and also labelled Jmonique.20d. I sent this draft on January 11, 2018, to my friend Bill Rusin in New York (Head of Sales at W.W.Norton publishing company), because he asked me to. This folder includes Xeroxes of photos of Pop and Monique and other family that I always included when I asked friends to read the book. Rusin read 88 pages and told me on the phone "it reads like the phone book." His reply letter is included here,...
