GOODBYE, MONIQUE (88), September 13, 2017
File — Box: 194, Folder: 4
Scope and Contents
BOOK TWO, a clean, original draft labelled Jmonique.18x. Also a *"good short version." Maybe better than just above. Dad and Johnny's lives from 1942 until Dad's death in 1998. Includes my visits with Mamita, flashback inserts from Dad and Monique's marriage and of her dying in Miami Beach. More in-depth about stepmother Brownie's temper and abuse. Very moving about my search for Monique, and about Pop's death. A little sketchy winding things up in the Epilogue. 158 pages. NOTE: I JUST READ THIS IN A NOV/DEC 2018 POETS & WRITERS MAGAZINE INTERVIEW WITH NOVELIST RICHARD POWERS. QUOTE: "YOU JUST REMINDED ME OF GEORGE SAND TALKING ABOUT THE WAY CHOPIN WOULD WRITE A SHORT PIECE. SHE SAID HE WOULD START OUT, AND IT WOULD BE BEAUTIFUL, IT WOULD BE LOVELY. AND THEN THERE WOULD FOLLOW THIS INCREDIBLE STRETCH OF TORTURE AND AGONY. EVERYTHING CAME APART. IT BECAME SOMETHING ELSE. HE HATED IT. HE WOULD THROW IT ALL AWAY, AND EVENTUALLY HE'D WORK HIS WAY BACK TO WHAT HE HAD AT THE BEGINNING." I CAN CERTAINLY SYMPATHIZE WITH THAT!
