GOODBYE, MONIQUE (87), August 10, 2017

 File — Box: 194, Folder: 3

Scope and Contents

BOOK TWO, a clean, original draft labelled Jmonique.18w, that I called *"the best short version." I may have been right. It begins with Pop suing Brownie for divorce in 1956, and then his and my lives that followed until his death in 1998. Monique is revealed, bit by bit, as I sought to learn about her throughout my life. It's a moving portrait of my dad, and of my search for Monique, and of his death, but it's not a portrait of Monique like that of her in the many BOOK ONEs I've written. I always knew the "Aftermath" 57 years were important, but could never figure out exactly how to meld that story to the rich story of Monique in BOOK ONE. So I kept going back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, never figuring that out. A freaking exasperating literary ping-pong game! 152 pages.
