GOODBYE, MONIQUE (71), February 3, 2017

 File — Box: 193, Folder: 1
Scope and Contents JMONIQUE.18b BOOK ONE about Pop and Monique until she dies in 1942. It includes a March 3, 2017 critique letter written by Morris Witten. A clean, original draft. Includes my parents' sexual difficulties; Monique reading K. Mansfield's story "Bliss;" and a lovely epilogue. *It's a beautiful draft, and close to a final book. Yet, sadly, I wasn't satisfied. 213 pages.

GOODBYE, MONIQUE (72), February 25, 2017

 File — Box: 193, Folder: 2-3
Scope and Contents BOOK ONE and BOOK TWO combined as one manuscript. Clean, original. *This is also a lovely draft with a good epilogue. 310 pages.

GOODBYE, MONIQUE (73), March 20, 2017

 File — Box: 193, Folder: 4
Scope and Contents BOOK TWO draft labelled Jmonique.18e, which is, basically, a mess! Includes a Prologue that is an edit of material when Monique was dying at the end of BOOK ONE. It does not work. Many Post-Its and hand corrections. This edit leads to Jmonique.18g. Sadly, I have written through the book, and I am just fucking up here. I was almost there in both drafts 71 and 72. This draft has 173 pages.

GOODBYE, MONIQUE (74), April 3, 2017

 File — Box: 193, Folder: 5
Scope and Contents BOOK ONE, labelled as Jmonique.18f, just Monique and Dad's life together until her death in 1942. It's clean, though with a handful of Post-It suggestions. I noted it's a precurser to Jmonique.19f, dated July 31, 2017. I was working back toward a simplified BOOK ONE. 218 pages. NOTE: I HAVE TRIAGED OUT SIX MORE COPIES OF GOODBYE, MONIQUE, DATED FROM FEBRUARY 3, 2017 TO APRIL 3, 2017. IT INCLUDED COPIES OF JMONIQUE.18b TO JMONIQUE.18f.

GOODBYE, MONIQUE (75), March 28, 2017

 File — Box: 193, Folder: 6
Scope and Contents BOOK TWO that is labelled Jmonique.18g. The book about Dad and Johnny's lives after Monique's death in 1942. Ends with Dad's death in 1998. Always refers to my search for Monique; my time with French relatives; my grilling of Pop about Monique, and his inability to talk much about her. And powerful sections of being with him as he died. A clean draft that contains a few deleted chapters and some Post-Its. I liked the manuscript and considered it close . . . but not quite there. 175 pages.

GOODBYE, MONIQUE (76), April 20, 2017

 File — Box: 193, Folder: 7
Scope and Contents BOOK ONE. And BOOK TWO (although very shortened and more like an Epilogue, only about 40 pages). Labelled Jmonique.18j. Clean draft with a few Post-Its in the Epilogue section. 250 pages.
Dates: April 20, 2017

GOODBYE, MONIQUE (77), April 25, 2017

 File — Box: 193, Folder: 8-9
Scope and Contents BOOK ONE and now an expanded BOOK TWO from the draft just above. I couldn't leave well enough alone! Labelled Jmonique.18j like the manuscript above, however, the BOOK TWO (Epilogue) section now has 100 pages instead of 40! I couldn't stop myself. Many Post-It suggestions near the end. 308 pages.

GOODBYE, MONIQUE (78), May 1, 2017

 File — Box: 193, Folder: 10
Scope and Contents BOOK ONE and short (23 pages) Epilogue. Labelled Jmonique.14k. Manuscript is clean, but has some of those ever-present Post-It suggestions. I feel like an IDIOT with all these different drafts so close together, but I had to print the corrected things out into hard copy because I can get no sense of a book scroll-reading it on the computer. Nevertheless, the endless minor changes seem like an example of The Mother of All Futility! The material, the facts, never really change, just get shifted...

GOODBYE, MONIQUE (79), May 10, 2017

 File — Box: 193, Folder: 11
Scope and Contents This is basically BOOK TWO, but the first 36 pages describe Monique and Dad's 1942 move to Miami Beach, then Monique's illness and death, her burial at Mastic and Dad's fight with my French grandmother, Mamita, for custody of me. (Bad idea!) And BOOK TWO, as I've described it, starts on page 37, Dad and Johnny's life after 1942, although our story is interspersed with some sections of Dad and Monique's life taken from BOOK ONE. Awkward! First page of this manuscript contains an interesting...

GOODBYE, MONIQUE (80), June 2, 2017

 File — Box: 193, Folder: 12
Scope and Contents BOOK ONE labelled as Jmonique.18p. Clean draft, pretty short, well-written. *I really liked it. But . . . I just couldn't stop fooling around with it, and I kept thinking the material in BOOK TWO was also important to the story. I was stuck in wanting to bring Monique's brief life alive, and yet also tell the story of Dad's life, and mine, after her death. But how to merge the two BOOKS into one good manuscript? 192 pages.

GOODBYE, MONIQUE (81), June 8, 2017

 File — Box: 193, Folder: 13
Scope and Contents BOOK TWO, the shortest version ever, labelled as Jmonique.18r. It has hand corrections, Post-Its, and edits done between June 8 and June 15, 2017. I wrote on the manuscript box cover: "I think this will be final draft!" No way! 143 pages.
Dates: June 8, 2017

GOODBYE, MONIQUE (82), June 12, 2017

 File — Box: 193, Folder: 14
Scope and Contents BOOK ONE, and probably the shortest version ever, labelled Jmonique.18s. Clean, very simple and straightforward, and a *lovely draft. Based on the theory of "less is more." Epilogue doesn't explain afterlife with stepmother whitewashing of Monique from my life, etc. On the ms. box cover I wrote "I think as close as I've yet gotten to a finished draft!" Then I added, "Nope, not hardly." But this draft comes close. It contains Post-Its suggesting additions taken mostly from Jmonique.20d. 148...

GOODBYE, MONIQUE (83), June 18, 2017

 File — Box: 193, Folder: 15
Scope and Contents BOOK TWO, a really short version labelled Jmonique.18w. Like BOOK ONE directly above, this draft is pretty clean, very simple, and presumes that "less is more." There's an 8-page flashback to their marriage taken from Jmonique.18k. Story doesn't dwell on Brownie abuse. Describes my letters late in life asking Pop about Monique. Plus our long phone calls when he relates in detail facts of their marriage long ago. And ms. also recounts the times I spent with Dad when he was dying. Epilogue kind...

GOODBYE, MONIQUE (84), July 25, 2017

 File — Box: 193, Folder: 16
Scope and Contents BOOK ONE, a clean, original ms. labelled Jmonique.19f. It lacks teenage Monique at Peacock Point; or with Oqwa Pi out west; or her time in Santa Fe. Only has 1933 AZ. Soda Springs Ranch experience. 33 chapters. 183 pages.
