German mining engineer and expedition artist who accompanied A. B. Gray and his party on their 1854 reconnaissance survey for a transcontinental railroad route along the 32nd parallel for the Texas Western Railroad Company. Twelve of the lithographs were done by Bien and Sterner Lithographers in New York and thirty-four were done by Middleton, Wallace and Company of Cincinnati. The journal/diary describes a U.S. surveying expedition to the Pacific Ocean, with entries recording observations about the seas, weather, marine life, birds, vegetation, natives, living conditions, etc., 1872-1875. Loose pages of another travel diary record Bayer's observations on a trip via steamer, leaving from NYC on September 5, 1879 and arriving in Pará, Brazil on Sept. 18, 1879.
