Biography

Howard Clinton Tibbitts (1863-1937) was a San Francisco based photographer. Beginning in 1892, and for the next 40 years, Tibbitts worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad, where he photographed American West, Canada, and Mexico. He documented landscapes, towns, industry, agriculture, parks, and public buildings to help promote Southern Pacific’s passenger service.

Tibbitts’ work was shown in Sunset magazine, Southern Pacific Railroad’s magazine. Sunset hoped to change the "wild west" misconception of the American West through images of its beauty and grandeur. The magazine especially featured locations on the Southern Pacific's Sunset line, which ran from New Orleans to San Francisco, including those in New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, and Mexico.
