Scope and content
This collection of three scrapbooks and one folder of letters to Ash, includes an amalgamation of news clippings. One scrapbook of clippings belonged to Ash's relative, Viola Tennessee Ash, who homesteaded in Clovis, N.M. The rest of the collection belonged to Ash. Two scrapbooks are filled with news articles about people and events of interest to Ash.

Biography
Alvin Ash was born in Texas in 1869 but his family moved to the New Mexico Territory when he was very young.
A significant event in Ash's life was when he joined Theodore Roosevelt and his Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War in 1898. A great many of the clippings in this colletion pertain to the relationship he had with these men after the War. After leaving the ser Ash was appointed in 1906 to the United States Customs Service as a line rider for Texas and Territory of New Mexico on the Mexican-American border. He resigned his post in 1914 and later (1921) joined the police force in El Paso, Texas.
