Abstract
The Federal Music Project was an agency of the Works Progress Administration that sought to provide work relief for unemployed musicians. This collection documents the activities of the Federal Music Project in New Mexico. Music education and preservation of Spanish-American folk music were two primary goals of the project, which was directed by Helen Chandler Ryan.

This is mainly a collection of New Mexican music recorded in early 1970's on 45 rpm discs, that gave been reformatted to cassettes. Griffith's original part is a unique representation of popular music at that time. A few later items have been added. The lyrics of "Honky Tonk Angels" and "You 'n' Me" are in Spanish and English while "Dejame Ir" is a Spanish translation of "Please Release and Let Me Go," a popular Country and Western song. This collection contains Spanish and English song books and manuscript sheet music related to the Southwest, Mexico, New Mexico, and Santa Fe. The music consists of folk songs, ballads, popular mariachi music, traditional fiesta music, cowboy songs, traditional Native American tribal music, and others. The collection includes general piano music once owned by Charlotte Ilfeld, Alice K. Plimpton, Mary R. Van Stone, Elizabeth Willis DeHuff, and Lucile and Loraine Ridout.

This collection contains correspondence, news clippings, concert programs, and sheet music from the UNM Music Department’s files and includes sheet music and a notebook from Grace Edmister, an early chair of the department, and an article about her.
