Scope and Content Note
This collection contains correspondence, news clippings, concert programs, and sheet music from the UNM Music Department’s files. Also included are materials from Grace Edmister, including sheet music, a notebook, and an article, as well as sheet music by Merrill Seeber, and correspondence and materials from Ernst Krenek and Stephen Reich. Much of the sheet music is transcribed traditional Hispanic and Native American songs.

Historical Note
Although music has been offered at the University since 1893, music as a degree-granting academic department did not emerge until much later. The first degree in music awarded at UNM was to Helen Thacker in 1920. Grace Thompson Edmister, who joined the music faculty in 1923 and then served as its chair from 1927 to 1942, is often credited with founding of the music department. It would be more accurate to say that she gave the department focus and stability during the period of rapid growth that followed the First World War. Notable UNM Music Department chairs that followed Edmister’s departure include John D. Robb (1942-1947), Hugh Miller (1947-1957), and Walter Keller (1967-1970).
