Scope and Contents

This interview with Dr. Alice Cushing (1930-2019) surveys the early part of her career. She was a pediatrician in Albuquerque and chair of the University of New Mexico School of Medicine's Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Cushing provides information about the foundation and early development of the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in the early 1960s; the pioneer internship and residency programs at the Bernalillo County Indian Hospital (UNM Hospital); the pediatrics community in Albuquerque; and much else.

Biographical / Historical

Dr. Alice Cushing (1930-2019) was a pediatrician and former university professor in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Dr. Cushing grew up in the Lovington/Hobbs area of New Mexico. She was inspired to be a doctor at age six when she met a local woman physician. Originally trained as a surgeon during the 1950s, Cushing later became a pediatrician and specialized in infectious diseases. She served as the chair of the UNM School of Medicine's Department of Pediatrics. She was married to Herbert L. Cushing, Jr.
