Biography / History

Founded in 1947 to promote the “art and science of Medicine through an understanding and utilization of the functions and procedures of physical therapy” and to encourage interest and understanding of the profession in the community, the New Mexico Chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association continues to provide education and support of the profession in the state of New Mexico. The national organization was founded in 1921 as the American Women’s Physical Therapeutic Association and originally accepted only female practitioners. During the 1930s and 1940s, membership expanded to include males and with the outbreak of World War II and the polio epidemic, physical therapists were in great demand. By the end of the 1940s, the organization changed its name to the American Physical Therapy Association and focused on establishing itself as a national organization. The organization is currently located in Alexandria, Virginia and continues to foster nationwide education and research within the physical therapy field.
