Scope and Content

From the Collection: Documented in this collection is Maxine O. Dellinger Wootton’s research for her manuscript, "The History of Abdominal Surgery in New Mexico." Included in the collection are Mrs. Wootton’s correspondence with "old time" doctors in the area, hospitals and libraries, all relevant to early surgeries in New Mexico. The paper traces the nature of abdominal surgeries in New Mexico beginning with Native American medicine men and Franciscans through the practices of the early twentieth century. In addition, the collection contains statistics gathered from New Mexico hospital registers on the number and type of abdominal surgeries performed beginning in 1887 and ending in 1957. Also included is the original manuscript and a 1962 reprint of the paper, newspaper clippings and a copy of a paper on early New Mexico medicine written by Dr. Victor K. Adam of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
