Documents transferred from Reies Tijerina’s personal copy of Recopilación de Leyes de los Reynos de las Indias, June 2017: Newsletter of the Alianza Federal de Pueblos Libres announcing Reies Tijerina’s candidacy for governor of New Mexico; two index cards with notes of resolutions presented to the Asamblea General de la AFM; two small loose sheets with addresses and notes; one loose notebook page with notes from the January 19, 1967 meeting of the Comite Ejecutivo de la Colonia Mexicana Merced de la Tierra Amarilla, detailing questions to be asked of Reies Tijerina about recognition of the grants of Tecolote, Chilili, Tome, Belen and Casa Colorada, and also regarding the protection of other grants under the Tratado de Guadalupe Hidalgo; one loose sheet with handwritten notes dated 1965; Tijerina's receipt for the purchase of Recopilación de Leyes de los Reynos de las Indias and two other titles from a book dealer in Spain.

Scope and Content From the Collection: The Reies Lopez Tijerina Papers document Tijerina's career as a Chicano activist in New Mexico with the bulk of the collection reflecting his activities from 1963-1978. Tijerina is most remembered for his June 5, 1967 raid on the Rio Arriba County Courthouse in Tierra Amarilla and the ensuing trial in which he defended himself to a 'not guilty' verdict.
