Scope and Content
The Harmon Percy Marble Photograph Collection is comprised of photographs primarily of Native American individuals and groups. Photographs focus on Navajo, Hopi, and Pueblo Indians of the Southwest, as well as Sioux and Menominee tribes. Photos depict dances, weaving, landscapes, dwellings, and other activities.
Identification of many of the photographs comes from Russell Hartman, Senior Collection Manager, Department of Anthropology, California Academy of Scince, San Francisco, via labels with the photos and via the Native American Images website. .

Biographical Information
Harmon Percy Marble was born in Nebraska on November 5, 1870. He began his career as a journalist, and then worked for the U.S. Government Indian Service (1911-1926). The Indian Service assigned him to reservations in the Southwest and Plains and he took advantage of that opportunity to photograph Native Americans. After his retirement, he moved to Las Vegas, Nevada where he was elected mayor (1938-1939). He died in Las Vegas on February 3, 1945.

The original accession contains 10 (5 x 7 in.) photographs of Native American persons from Sioux, Hopi, Navajo, and Taos Pueblo taken by Harmon Percy Marble. The first addition contains 44 (5 x 7 in.) sepia photographs of Sioux, Menominee, Navajo, and Hopi Native Americans, and Civil War veterans in Wisconsin.
