Alan Paine Radebaugh Collection of Country Western Music and Interviews
Collection
Identifier: MU-25
Scope and Content
Alan Paine Radebaugh donated this collection of interviews with four New Mexico country western musicians and recordings of their live performances to the University of New Mexico Fine Arts Library in 1996. The majority of the recordings were made by Radebaugh in 1995 and 1996, while other duplicated material dates back to the 1960s and before. The musicians that Radebaugh interviewed are Joseph Looney, Robert Carley, Ned Holloway and Sidney Fleming. They are all professional musicians who have played in Albuquerque and New Mexico. They play different instruments and have developed their own individual musical styles. The four performers signed releases to Radebaugh and the Library for the interviews and copies of their music. Ned Holloway included a recording of his songs from 1994. Robert Carley included a recording of his trio from 1986. Sidney and Fay Fleming included recordings of fiddle music from 1965 and 1971, from old 78 rpm records. Radebaugh also included short biographies of the singers.
In addition, Radebaugh duplicated a number of early country western albums and included them in the collection. These recordings of country and cowboy songs date from about 1920 to the middle 1960s. Represented here are vocal and instrumental, Western swing, rhythm and blues, rock and roll, waltzes and dance music, and Western American and Spanish folk music. The songs are in English and Spanish.
Forms part of the John Donald Robb Archive of Southwestern Music.

Biography / History
Radebaugh is a visual artist, working primarily with oil paintings, although he also does sculpture, prints and drawings. His work is in the collections of the University of New Mexico, the Albuquerque Museum and New Mexico Museum of Fine Art, as well as across the country. He also plays a variety of instruments and music is a pastime and passion for him. When his neighbor, Ned Holloway, was elderly and dying, Radebaugh helped take care of him and Holloway told him many stories about his early days as a country western musician in Albuquerque, traveling from town to town and performing on the radio. This experience plus studying country music in a University of New Mexico music course, inspired Radebaugh to not only interview and record Ned's songs, but that of the other three performers and different country albums in this collection as well.
