University of New Mexico Board of Regents Records,

 Collection
Identifier: UNMA 011

Scope and Content

Users are cautioned that this collection is not complete. There is a major gap in the agendas between 1945 and 1959. Additionally, not all minutes for the covered period are included, and some of the minutes that are included are in draft form and may not reflect the final approved version. However, the official minutes of the Baord of Regents are microfilmed. The agendas included in the collection are also known to be incomplete. It is the practice of the Board to allow materials to be passed out at the meeting that have not been included in the official agenda package. These materials may or may not be listed on the agenda and frequently come from the advisors to the regents or from other University officials, or from members of the general public who either wish to bring a matter to the attention of the regents or wish to affect a decision of the board. Where these materials were included with the saved material they have been included in the collection, but it is often the case that the materials were not saved by the collecting agency, thus leaving gaps. Also contains regents' policy manual, newspaper clippings about board members, material on University miscellaneous matters, 1917-1982, and folders on individual board members such as Calvin Horn and Jerry Apodaca. Individual and group photographs are included

The collection forms part of the University of New Mexico Secretary Collections; which also includes: University of New Mexico Commencement, University of New Mexico Faculty Senate Records, and University of New Mexico Celebrations.

History

Although the archive is listed as belonging to the University Secretary, that office was not established until 1948 by President Tom Popejoy. Prior to that time the responsibility for the records rested with the Office of the President. John Durrie, who was named the first Secretary of the University, was responsible for gathering most of the materials from the early years and saving them from destruction. Despite his best efforts, however, he could not always control events. As the records aged they were transferred from his office to the basement of Scholes Hall where they were subjected to vermin and occasional flooding. Many of the records dated from 1945-1960 were lost to flooding in the building the spring of 1960. Durrie was succeeded by his long-time assistant, Anne Brown, in 1976 and she held the office until February 1993. After her departure the responsibility for preparing and maintaining the minutes, agendas and other records was transferred back to the Office of the President. The Office of the Regents was created in 2005 and Ellen Wenzel, Special Assistant to the Board of Regents, assumed the responsibility.
