Background Information

1987 was both the bicentennial of the signing of the United States Constitution, and the diamond jubilee (75th anniversary) of New Mexico Statehood. Preparations began in 1985 for the double celebration. In 1986, the Albuquerque City Council passed Council Bill No. R-42, creating a Bicentennial/Diamond Jubilee Committee to organize the celebrations for the city. The New Mexico legislature passed House Bill 259, creating a similar commission... at the state level. Albuquerque's Bicentennial Diamond Jubilee Committee, in cooperation with its state and federal counterparts, planned and administered many public cultural and educational events, and coordinated the production of commemorative memorabilia in honor of the occasion.
