Institutional History
The New Mexico Association of Legal Secretaries (NMALS) was organized in 1964. Affiliated with the National Association of Legal Secretaries, NMALS serves as a link between local chapters and the National Association. There are nine local chapters as well as members-at-large in New Mexico. The state organization is the communications link between chapters and, in conjunction with local chapters, sponsors legal education activities. These include statewide workshops and seminars, publication of a frequently updated handbook for legal secretaries in New Mexico and scholarships for secretarial students interested in law. Other activities include assisting the State Bar of New Mexico with their annual convention and sending state representatives to National Association meetings.
