Biography/History
J. Stokley Ligon, wildlife specialist and conservationist, was born in Hays County, Texas, on June 22, 1879. He was educated in Texas and moved to New Mexico in 1907. In 1913, Ligon entered the U.S. Biological Survey and studied New Mexico's birds and mammals. From 1927-1930, Ligon worked for the New Mexico Game Department. Following that position, he consulted for the Game Department, acted as a regional inspector for the Fish and Wildlife Branch in Albuquerque, wrote numerous conservation-oriented articles for New Mexico Magazine, published several books on New Mexico wildlife topics, and owned a game bird farm at his home in Carlsbad, New Mexico.
Ligon retired from consulting work in 1943, but continued to write about wildlife in New Mexico. His New Mexico bird book was published posthumously, a few months after Ligon died in the summer of 1961.
