Scope and Content

The collection consists of one diary which covers 8 months of E. Meek's life in Raton, N. M., 1892-1893. The entries include daily observations on the local weather, railroad trains coming into the depot, train destinations, co-workers, train wrecks, strikes and, train orders. Meek records town shootings, thefts, local fights, and the arrival of the Circuit Court. The diary has many entries about boxing, both professional and his own amateur endeavors. He writes of gambling at the Crystal Palace in the east part of town called Chihuahua (later called Buena Vista). There are several entries that elude to an unrequited romantic interest. He describes Labor Day and Christmas celebrations, Presbyterian church socials, dancing, and black musicians. He mentions events of nature like a comet and a solar eclipse that couldn't be seen because of cloud cover. Meek often mentions his mother, Mamie. He observed an Indian fiesta at Taos, and mentions his visits to other New Mexico towns like Las Vegas, Santa Fe, and Albuquerque.

Annotations to the diary were made by Meek in 1951.

Biography

Meek was born in Nebraska on Nov. 16, 1872. On Aug. 22, 1892 at the age of 20, he moved to Raton, N.M. to work for the railroad. His exact occupation is unclear, he was either a telegraph operator or a railroad station man. His diary covers the period from May 27, 1892-Jan.28, 1893.
