Scope and Contents

From the Collection: The Nicolaas Moolenijzer Papers span the years 1882-1992 with the bulk of the collection falling in the 1960-1980 time period. The papaers are a collection of research by Moolenijzer on various aspects of sports and physical education globally, with a specific emphasis on the Austrian School of 'Natural' Gymnastics developed by Dr. Margarete Streicher in Vienna during the interwar period. The collection also includes notable contributions to physical education by Karl Gaulhofer and Adalbert Slama. The papers include articles about Dr. Streicher and her methods, transcripts and recordings of interviews between Moolenijzer and Streicher, essays and articles written by Streicher, and general correspondences between Streicher and Moolenijzer. The collection also features lecture notes on the history of physical education, photographs, microfilm, negatives, and J.C.F. Guts Muths' contributions to the development of physical education in Europe in the 18th Century.

The collection is organized into four series: Dr. Margarete Streicher, Nicolaas Moolenijzer, International and General Sports and Sports History, and Audio-Visual. Each series is further organized into subgroups for easier navigation. The Dr. Margarete Streicher series is grouped into early work, essays about Streicher, Moolenijzer recordings and correspondences, and contributions to Austrian physical education. The Nicolaas Moolenijzer series is grouped into early work, lecture notes arranged alphabetically, J.C.F. Guts Muths, and educators. The International and General Sports and Sports History series is organized into countries arranged alphabetically, international sports, and individual sports arranged alphabetically. The Audio-Visual series is grouped into magazines and newspapers arranged chronologically, miscellaneous, photographs, and countries arranged alphabetically.
