Scope and Contents

Lecture for his class on Nahuatlismos (fair to good recording, talk on Nahuatl or Aztec words entering into the Spanish language, words from ancient Mexico, in the first part of the recording Cobos is telling the students a story about a man who was getting old but was give twenty more years to live by La Muerte, by Death, who had come to visit him and would come back for him in twenty years, just before the twenty years were up he told his wife, a viejecita, to tell Death that he had gone to the store, Death cane and so he was away, and on another day Death came and he had gone to work in his jardin, garden, Death was getting tired fo this and could not take the man, so Death took his garden tool or stick instead. Then he begins to talks about nahuatl sounds in the language which entered into New Mexico from the South, sounds, friccative, aspiracion, ch, h instead of f, mentions where sounds came from like old vocabulary from Spain, history of the words, words in New Mexico used here, like those found in in Cervantes and other early literary pieces, from medieval times, also other from the Aztec - Nahuatl terms and sounds were not known in Spain, only came in from Mexico, in the language of Mexico, and that they were used in early New Mexico, he told how the Spanish in Mexico evolved but the Spanish of Northern New Mexico and Colorado did not, the language, vocabulary was frozen in time, as Mexican Spanish changed they forgot the old Nahuatl words but some of them survived over time in New Mexico and Colorado until today, he then reads off a list of such words and explains them, for many things, birds, food, fruit, grass, tools, etc., machete, zacate, soquete, chinchontes, jarabe tapatio, tamaltas, cuate, etc.).
