 Item — Box: 13, CD: Lect 29

Scope and Contents

Continuation of a lecture on Mexicanismos or Mexican words in the Spanish language of New Mexico (fair to good recording, in Spanish, volume is too low, but you can still hear him, it is hard to make out some of the words, he gives examples of words, verbs from Mexico; he refers to a dictionary of mexican words, mexicanismos, by Francisco Santa Maria, a thick big book that he liked and use, then Cobos refers to a list that he has given the class, that students are to bring to class that week; he reads down the list and describes, gives the meaning and background of the words, places where the expressions are used in New Mexico, variations, for example, chicos, lodo, soquete, gringo as used in New Mexico and in Latin American countries, etc.; also talks about Pachucos, some pachuchismos again here, watchele, watchar; also another use of the word indio, Pedro Vargas, seeing you, watchman; also examples of expressions in Spain that are different from Mexico, and in the Southwest, etc.).
