Scope and Contents

Lecture on the Spanish language of New Mexico, part of the lecture series, Aspectos de la Cultura Hispanica, sponsored by the Spanish Department of the University of New Mexico, introduction by Professor Tony Marquez, who praises the work of Dr. Cobos (lecture in Spanish, good recording, he gives an overview of the history and characteristics of the Spanish language in New Mexico and the elements that are part of it, Cobos quotes Sabine Ulibarri who said the the main part of the culture of a people is their language, must maintain it to maintain traditions, Cobos notes the Spanish colonists brought the Spanish language to the area, with examples of their archaic words, archaismos, coming from the Spanish language of Spain, and via New Spain or Mexico, of the fifthteen, sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, he gives examples of words from Spanish literature that are used in New Mexico, he notes the Spanish settlers taught their language, religion and culture to the Native American Indians, the Pueblos, but the Indians did not share much of their culture, traditions or religion with the Europeans, he give examples of a few Native American words use in the Spanish language of New Mexico, Indigenismos, then he moves on to the words from Mexico of the national era, independent Mexico, that were introduced into the Spanish language of New Mexico, and gives examples of some, Mexicanismos, then talks about the words adopted from English, Inglesismos, from the North Americans, Anglo American, into New Mexico, with examples, use of a combination of works, Spanglish, and also includes words introduced by the Pachucos, Pachuquismos, with examples, humorous, and then gives examples of words in Spanish that have different meanings in Spain, Mexico, or New Mexico, etc.).
