From the Series: Abstract: 2/21/2013, 4/2/2013, 4/11/2013,8/13/2013. In the first interview, Joseph Suina details his experience as a principle at San Felipe Pueblo and as a teacher in Acoma. He discusses community-based education, and daily life as a child growing up in the Pueblo. His second interview focuses on his transition into higher education at U.N.M. and some of the educational challenges he observed throughout his life in relation to educational policy, practices, curriculum and teacher perspective/training in relation to Indian Education. He discusses the charter schools and bilingual education initiatives. In his third interview, he focuses more on the policies which shaped Indian Education, including Public Law 93-638: The Indian Self-Determination Act and the impact on several schools including the Santa Fe Indian School. He elaborates on bilingual education through his involvement as faculty at UNM and at the American Indian Bilingual Center. In his fourth interview he gives advice on how to conduct research on and for Native tribes, and advice for Native students.
