EUROPE, SUMMER OF 1960

 File — Box: 135, Folder: 36

Scope and Contents

This notebook has 190 pages of writing, with an added 7 loose pages torn from the notebook in front. First 30 pages of notebook has mostly my journals from March and April 1960 at Hamilton College, except for pages 26-28, which relate to my novel, The Garden, a story about a young guy and old man in prison. Pages 31-50 are solid passages from The Garden. (See more sections of The Garden in my MANUSCRIPT FILES in BOX 2, FOLDERS 5-7.) The first 30 pages also have writing ideas. The diary entries talk of dating girls at Cazenovia, Middlebury, Wellesley among other things. The "Europe, Summer of 1960" diary of Spain (and France, Italy, England) begins on page 51 (on June 11, 1960 when my friend Bill Willis and I flew to Barcelona), and it runs to page 190. We stayed at my grandmother Mamita's Barcelona apartment; went to bullfighting school; attended Barcelona corridas; ran before bulls in Pamplona; traveled around Spain in a little Dauphine; witnessed a great mano a mano between Antonio Ordoñez and Paco Camino in Valencia during their feria; saw El Cordobés fight in Córdoba; drove a Bultaco motorcycle up to Collioure, France; flew to visit relatives in Cannes; attended the 1960 Rome Olympics; flew to England to visit Bill's aunt in Oxford; stopped at Paris a few days; and returned to Barcelona. We had a blast. There are many of my ink sketches throughout the notebook.
