Scope and Contents

My father died in Smithville, Texas, on April 13, 1998. A Smithville funeral was held on April 15. On May 16 our family had a memorial at the William Floyd Estate in Mastic, New York, the family home where Pop was born in 1916. This file includes: 1.) An obituary I wrote on April 13, 1998 and faxed to Metta Johnson, the Smithville newspaper editor, and to Dad's stepdaughter, Carol Brown, in Bastrop, TX. 2.) A packet I gave to family members at the May 16 Mastic memorial. The packet includes: Xeroxes of an invitation to the gathering; a photo of Dad; a 1980 article about his teaching in Colorado Springs; excerpts about my father from The Last Beautiful Days of Autumn; a long 1983 letter he wrote to me explaining The Communication of Emotion; a poem about change he wrote in 1936; 12 articles on nature he published in the Smithville Times; my homage to Pop in a 1997 Audubon Magazine called "A Man for all Seasons;" a copy of the Smithville Times' obituary; another obituary from the Colorado Springs Gazette; eulogies by Dad's friends Duck Pond and Clay McKee; my eulogy in limericks in Smithville on April 15...and my eulogy for Pop on May 16 at the William Floyd Estate in Mastic, Long Island, N.Y. Access Restrictions

The collection is open for research, however, researchers must sign consent form prior to gaining access to materials. Calavera drawings, proofs, and etchings as well as "little diaries" (Boxes 14, 125, 126, 129, 142) are housed in high security and may require up to 24 hours for retrieval. Enlarged photocopies and typed transcriptions of "little diaries" in Box 142 are located in Box 184.
