JIM SAGEL, APRIL 22, 1998/MAY 9, 1998

 File — Box: 131, Folder: 16

Scope and Contents

Jim was a friend and fellow writer. He committed suicide on April 6, 1998, a week before my father died. Jim was 50. The day he died I had gone to Los Alamos to speak to Jim's class. I learned of his death 10 minutes before class and gave my first eulogy for Jim to that class. I returned to Los Alamos on April 22 for an official service. My eulogy was a poem to Jim. On May 9 I read a prose eulogy for Jim in Taos. Jim is mentioned often in these archives in my ACTIVITIES FILES relating to workshops and other events he sponsored, and in the JIM SAGEL folder of my GENERAL CORRESPONDENCE FILES. This folder includes: 1.) April 20 phone notes with Carlos Ramirez, director of UNM-Los Alamos where Jim taught. 2.) 6-page handwritten eulogy/poem for Jim that I read on April 22, 1998 in Los Alamos. 3.) 3 typewritten drafts of that poem with minor corrections. 4.) My April 23 letter to Jim's wife, Teresa Archuleta Sagel and a note to me from Teresa. 5.) Note announcing Taos service for Jim on May 9. 6.) My 10-page handwritten draft of Taos eulogy for Jim on May 9. 8.) 3 typed drafts of my May 9 comments with minor corrections each time. 9.) Note to Victor Fuentes giving permission to reprint my eulogy/poem to Jim. 10.) PEN newsletter obituary for Jim. 11.) Map of Taos UNM campus where memorial service was held May 9. 12.) Los Alamos UNM Newsline obituary for Jim. 13.) One other obit, and a program for April 22 Los Alamos service (which includes list of his books), and a church service memorial card for Jim. (Pages in this file are numbered 1-46 at bottom of page.)
