MEL HOWARD, July 28, 1996
File — Box: 131, Folder: 11
Scope and Contents
Mel Howard was an actor, director, AD, and a film professor. He gained acclaim for a 1975 film he acted in with Carol Kane called Hester Street. I met Mel through my Hollywood pal, Leo Garen. Mel almost directed my novel The Wizard of Loneliness. We talked about doing film projects together. (See MEL HOWARD in my GENERAL CORRESPONDENCE FILES.) Mel had hepatitis and died after a liver transplant. His wife (partner?), Michelle LeBrun, made a documentary about Mel facing death. It was first called "Mel 'n Me." That segued into "Death a Love Story." I saw it at the 1999 Taos Talking Pictures Festival. This folder contains: 1.) A hand-written 3-page draft of my comments about Mel. 2.) Two clean typed drafts of my comments. 3.) A cover letter to Michelle LeBrun when I faxed my 2 pages of typed words to her in Los Angeles for Mel's memorial service. 4.) A December 17, 1997 2-page form letter from Michelle LeBrun seeking financial help to finish her film, "Mel 'n Me." 5.) 2 1999 postcards advertising screenings of "Death a Love Story." (Pages in this file are numbered 1-12 at bottom of page.)
