ANDRÉS MARTINEZ, December 14, 1990

 File — Box: 131, Folder: 5

Scope and Contents

Andrés Martínez was my friend and teacher from the early 1970s until his death on December 14, 1990. He is mentioned often in these archives and in my non-fiction book The Last Beautiful Days of Autumn. (See INDIAN CAMP DAM material in BOX 14, FOLDERS 8-11; and the ANDRÉS MARTINEZ FILE in BOX 15, FOLDERS 1-3; and more Andrés Martínez material in BOX 89, FOLDERS 15 and 40.) Though Andrés was a Mormon and Republican, we got along fine. As President of the Tres Rios Association he fought the Indian Camp Dam. The Milagro Beanfield War is dedicated to Andrés and that Association. Andrés greatly influenced my life in Taos. This folder contains: 1.) 2 handwritten drafts (3 pages and 4 pages) of my Taos News obituary for Andrés. 2.) A handwritten 12-page draft of my eulogy for Andrés at the Mormon Church. 3.) 1 typed draft (2 pages) of the obituary. Attached is 2-page typed resume of Andrés's life. 4.) Typed eulogy (8 pages) for Andres I gave at Mormon church. 5.) A page I typed for Andrés titled "How do I experience growing old?" 6.) My Dec. 17, 1990 letter to Rose Martínez, who cared for Andrés during his final years. 7.) A typed chronology of Andrés's life (3 pages). 8.) A Taos News with his obituary; another newspaper article about Andrés, the Living Treasure; an article including Andrés when the NM Acequia Association was formed in 1988. 9.) Note from David Fernández to me; program for Andrés's service at the Mormon church; card to me from Anita (Vogt) Davis about Andrés; a letter to me from someone named Roberta about Andrés. (I have numbered the 8 and 1/2 by 11 pages in this file from 1-37 at bottom of page.)
