RINI TEMPLETON, June 27, 1986

 File — Box: 131, Folder: 4

Scope and Contents

Rini Templeton was a revolutionary artist whose graphic works are still used around the world in progressive publications. She died at 51 in Mexico City on June 15, 1986. She had a cabin on Pilar Hill, south of Taos. Rini contributed drawings to the New Mexico Review during the early 1970s when I wrote for it. She and I put out the last three NMR issues in 1972. Rini worked with Betita Martínez on El Grito del Norte in Española. She was active with the Taller Grafico in Tierra Amarilla, and spent much time in Mexico with activist groups there. Rini illustrated my novel, The Milagro Beanfield War. The UNM Center for SW Research has the original drawing Rini did for the Milagro cover. Milagro is partially dedicated to her. I published an essay about Rini called "To Be of Use" in Dancing on the Stones, published by UNM Press in 2000. Rini's Taos memorial was held in Pilar on June 27, 1986. I cleaned out Rini's house after she died, safe-keeping her artwork until it went to family or museums. This folder includes: 1.) Announcement of her death in Mexico in La Jornada, June 20, 1986. 2.) 3 Primero de Mayo flyers drawn by Rini passed out at her Pilar, NM memorial, June 27, 1986. 3.) 2 Inti Raymi flyers for Rini's memorial in Albuquerque June 28, 1986. 4.) 5 letters from Betita Martínez related to planning a book about Rini. 5.) 2 copies of a plan for this book about Rini and her work. 6.) My 9-page first draft of a Feb. 1987 forward to book about Rini, drawing on words I spoke at her Pilar memorial the previous June. Many hand corrections. 7.) A 1988 flyer from Ganados del Valle in Tierra Amarilla selling cards designed by Rini to raise money for Ganados. 8.) Article in Spanish newspaper about Rini's life and death. Paper unidentified and undated. 9.) 4-page flyer for RINI, PRESENTE! a program about her life and work in San Francisco, Oct. 28, 2006. (Pages in this file are numbered 1-36 at the bottom of each page.) (See DESCRIPTION OF THE JUNE 27, 1986 PILAR MEMORIAL FOR RINI IN MY JOURNAL/DIARIES ARCHIVES under "MILAGRO" FILM JOURNAL, 1986.)
