Scope and Content

From the Collection: This collection of letters describes problems at the Lillie Ranch in Kelly (Socorro County), N.M. in the late 1800s. Two letters are written to Sara J. Boggs by Lt. S. W. Fountain (8th U.S. Cavalry) near Alma, NM, detailing an incident with the Indians in which her brother, John Lillie, was killed and his house burned. Fountain also mentions an incident in which Geronimo was supposed to surrender to General Crook, but did not.

The bulk of the letters (7) are written by Thomas P. Williams, who owned the ranch next to the Lillie ranch, and was caretaking the Lillie ranch after John Lillie's death. In his letters, Williams conveys information to Dr. J. H. Lillie, father of John Lillie, about the ranch, the cattle, the Indians, the harsh winter. He speaks of financial problems, repeatedly asking to be paid for his work.

Another letter is written by W. M. Chenning, Deputy Probate Clerk and Recorder advising Dr. Lillie about his son's estate.
