Scope and Contents
Drafted and went from basic training directly to war. Bemoans that the military taught him nothing but how to kill. Heavy weapons infantry. Sent to the front to conduct reconnaissance. Describes the risks of the missions, the benefits of his upbringing and the value of Native American soldiers for this sort of work. Recounts losing 75 men from his company during a river crossing. Served with 2nd, 3rd and 7th Divisions, spending all of his time at the front. Mentions Papasan Mountain, Porkchop Hill, Jane Russell Hill. Describes hand-to-hand combat, nearly being killed, saved by Italian buddy. Extended description of experiencing significant effects of PTSD years later and treatment. Describes his childhood experience as an orphan and being welcomed back to the United States after the war. 25:41 Total.
