Scope and Contents

Says that training was fun, but serving overseas was not. Working in Kansas City, Missouri when he was drafted in 1942 or 1943. Sent to Fort Bliss, Texas, and then Fort Ord, California for basic training. Infantry. Sent to Hawaii, then to Saipan and Mariana Islands. Landed at Iwo Jima and Okinawa, where he saw heavy fighting. Discusses serving with another Pueblo soldier from Ohkay Owingeh (San Juan). Describes the impressive Japanese cave system. Getting along, no racial problems. Describes the happiness of coming home. Sent to Leyte, Philippines to prepare for the invasion of Japan. Describes the loss of friends in war as the hardest memory. Offers advice to young soldiers facing combat. Discusses experiencing the effects of PTSD. Says he prays to avoid future war and live in peace. Bemoans the development of modern weapons. Describes health problems.
