Working as a farmer when he was drafted by “Uncle Sam” at age 21. Trained at Fort Bliss, Texas. Sent to Scotland, England, Germany. Landed at Normandy on D-Day. Describes incident transporting German POWs. Mentions seeing action in Belgium and leave in Paris. Describes suffering PTSD for decades after the war until he found peace. Pushed by interviewer to describe incident of killing a German soldier at close range. Describes isolation from other, non-Native soldiers. Speaks for a few moments with Avelino Calabaza in Keres. Discusses losing his parents at a very early age; he left school after the third grade to be raised as a farmer by his uncle. Describes crops, animals. Total 15:16.
